The eleventh program of the “Islamic Studies Conference” series organized by the School of Islamic Studies at Ibn Haldun University will be held under the title “Yunus Emre’s Choice: Morality or Love?” The event will feature Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Murat Özel from Medeniyet University as the speaker and will take place on Tuesday, 16 December 2025, at 14:00, in the Media and Event Center, Teoman Duralı Conference Hall. Assoc. Prof. Ahmet Murat Özel will examine the relationship between morality and love, which holds a central place in Yunus Emre’s intellectual world, through a comprehensive analysis grounded in key concepts of the Sufi tradition and Yunus’s poetic language. The lecture will offer an opportunity to reconsider how Yunus conceptualizes the spiritual transformation of the human being and the profound bond he establishes between moral maturity and divine love. Drawing on both classical Sufi texts and the contemporary academic literature on Yunus Emre, Assoc. Prof. Özel will focus on questions such as: Does love come first for Yunus, or morality? Or do the two constitute an integrated whole that mutually forms and completes each other? And what does Yunus’s language offer to today’s moral quests?
