Our student, Sena Nur Yıldız Dekker, presented her study titled “The Dispute Literature in the 17th Century Ottoman Empire: Beyāżīzāde Aḥmed Efendi’s Fifty Issues” at the 6th International Māturidism Symposium: Ḥanafism and Māturidism in the Ottoman Empire, organized by Selçuk University this year on November 1-2.
This study focuses on the differences between the Māturīdī and Ash’arī schools as cited by the 17th-century Ottoman scholar Beyāżīzāde Aḥmed Efendi (1098/1687) in his works al-uṣūl al-munīfa, which compiles the views of Abū Ḥanīfa, and Ishārāt al-marām min ʿibārāt al-imām, a commentary on the former. The study examines Beyāżīzāde’s defense of his school and discusses whether Ishārāt al-marām can be classified as part of the literature of disputes. The primary aim of the study is to present the translation of fifty issues that Beyāżīzāde highlights as true differences between the Māturīdī and Ash’arī schools. These fifty issues cover topics such as ontology, epistemology, good and evil (ḥusn and qubḥ), the attributes of God, divine and human actions, faith (īmān), and prophethood (nubuwwa).
