On November 21-22, 2024, Gaziantep Islam Science and Technology University organized the 1st International Strategic Negotiations Forum under the theme “The Search for Communication and Trust in the Islamic World”
Among the topics discussed was the pressing need for effective and deterrent institutional models that can ensure unity within the Islamic world. Historically, certain institutional structures have existed within Muslim societies. However, it appears challenging to reach definitive conclusions regarding their adequacy. Expanding and improving the quality and quantity of influential institutions would yield significant benefits, both in fostering cooperation among Muslim countries and enhancing relations with other nations.
In this context, one of our faculty members, Prof. Dr. Serdar Demirel, delivered a presentation titled "Models of Unity and Institutional Experiences: Principles of Coexistence in the Context of the Life Models of Prophet Muhammad."
In his paper, he examined the multicultural living models preached by the Prophet Muhammad in Mecca and implemented in Medina. The principles he applied serve as a guiding framework for strengthening social peace and enabling individuals with different religious identities to live harmoniously together. The following headings constitute the principles discussed in the paper:
Fundamental Principles of Living Together in Peace
Demirel emphasized that, inspired by the practices of the Prophet Muhammad, inclusive, just, and libertarian models can be developed in modern societies. These models would aim to preserve freedom of belief while also striking a balance between integration and assimilation. Accordingly, multicultural living models guided by the Qur’an and the Sunnah could transcend the modern nation-state paradigm and demonstrate the possibility of establishing a fairer and more inclusive social order.
