The School of Islamic Studies is organizing an event titled "Muslims' First City-Building Experience: The Example of Basra" Moderated by our faculty member Prof. Dr. Bilal Aybakan, the event will feature Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Usluer (Faculty of Theology, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University) as the speaker. It will occur on Monday, December 9, at 8:00 PM via Zoom.
Muslim Arabs initially established Basra as a garrison for military campaigns against Sasanian territories. Over time, it grew with the intensive settlement of Arab tribes. The competition and alliances among these tribes shaped the city's political and social structure. With the gradual settlement of people from various ethnicities and beliefs, Basra evolved into a hub of significant ethnic and cultural diversity. This cosmopolitan character laid the groundwork for the emergence of numerous political and religious groups. The ideas and debates of these groups turned Basra into a center of learning. The city's cultural richness significantly transformed cuisine, clothing, and social life. These changes made Basra a focal point of religious, intellectual, and socio-cultural appeal in the Islamic world. Consequently, Basra left a lasting impact not only during its own time but also as a legacy for the future of the Islamic world.
