The conference ‘Nawādir as a Type of Masail in Fiqh: Hanafi Madhhab Nawādir Literature’ will be organized by the School of Islamic Studies of IHU on Monday, December 30, at 20:00. The program will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Bilal Aybakan, with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Orhan Ençakar as the speaker. The event will take place online via Zoom.

In the legal schools of Islamic jurisprudence, the issues (masail) attributed to the founding imams are classified into two primary categories based on their informational and source value: usul (principles) and nawadir (rare issues). The term usul refers to the general name for works that contain the foundational views of the founding imams on substantive law (furu‘ al-fiqh). These works, which are written and compiled into textual form, constitute the main body of the madhhab.

Nawadir, on the other hand, comprises the views of the founding imams that are not included in the works classified as usul. These were typically gathered by their students and do not have the form of a complete text. In this way, all the legal issues (masail) attributed to the founding imams, along with their informational and source value, were transmitted to future generations through the classification of usul and nawadir.

This session will focus on the works that compile nawadir issues—regarded as the most significant sources after the usul issues transmitted from the founding imams of the Hanafi school—and their key characteristics.
