School of Islamic Studies Held “Understanding Muslim Subjectivities in Local and Global Contexts”
With the coordination of the School of Islamic Studies and the Department of Sociology, “CMS CIRCLE Workshop Series I: Understanding Muslim Subjectivities in Local and Global Contexts” is held.

Coordinated by Asst. Prof. Mehmet Ali Başak from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies and organized in collaboration with the Department of Sociology, with the contributions of Asst. Prof. Tesnim Khriji Chirchi and Visiting Researcher Dr. Intissar Kherigi, the “CMS CIRCLE Workshop Series I: Understanding Muslim Subjectivities in Local and Global Contexts” was successfully held on May 15, 2026, at the Darulkurra, Süleymaniye Campus.

The workshop was attended by senior undergraduate, master's, and PhD students from Palestine, Iran, Nigeria, Iraq, Canada, Syria, and Türkiye, currently studying at Ibn Haldun University, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul Medeniyet University, and Marmara University.

Featuring multiple sessions co-facilitated by Asst. Prof. Tesnim Khriji Chirchi and Asst. Prof. Mehmet Ali Başak, the workshop brought together local and international academics and young researchers.

The program began with a teaching session titled “Theorizing Muslim Subjectivities” by Assoc. Prof. Kirsten Wesselhoeft from Vassar College in the United States, followed by methods seminars and applied laboratories focusing on fieldwork.

In the afternoon sessions, Dr. Nesibe Demir presented her research on “Muslim Youth Subjectivities in Türkiye” while Dr. Intissar Kherigi presented on “Muslim Subjectivities in Europe and the Digital Sphere”.

The event concluded with practical group mapping activities, mini research design labs, and a closing plenary, all guided by the facilitators.
